In the film industry, there's always something new and exciting just around the corner. Next up on our list is The Holiday's Jude Law, who has taken on a challenging role in his latest movie, The Order. Working alongside Nicholas Hoult, the 51-year-old Hollywood star has completely transformed from his usual charming and lovable self to a gritty and determined FBI agent.
Based on the 1989 non-fiction book The Silent Brotherhood, The Order follows the story of FBI agent Terry Husk as he tracks down white nationalist leader Robert Jay Matthews and his dangerous neo-Nazi movement. In a rare on-screen appearance together, Law and Hoult's characters engage in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase, fueled by Law's unconventional method acting.
Director Justin Kurzel pushed Law to immerse himself in his character's psyche by giving him a unique task: follow his co-star Hoult for a day without being detected and compile a detailed file of his activities. Although challenging, Law found the experience to be incredibly rewarding and ultimately beneficial to his performance.
Law shared, "It's symbolic of the kind of director Justin is and how he builds relationships with his actors. By the time we started filming, there was an intuitive understanding between us of who Husk was." His dedication to his role paid off, as evident in his intense and gripping performance.
Interestingly, Hoult was completely unaware of Law's sneaky tactics until the movie's premiere. During a press conference, he revealed, "I just found out on the boat [in Venice] that one of Jude's tasks was to follow me for the day. He was trailing me for a day, and I didn't even know about it!" This level of preparation was new for Hoult, who admitted that he had never worked with a director who gave them specific tasks to prepare for their roles.
It wasn't until four or five weeks into filming that Law and Hoult finally shared the screen together. This delay only added to the intense energy of their first interaction, which Law described as "giving a great energy to those moments."
The Order's themes hit close to home for Hoult, as the movie is set in 1980s Washington and tackles the issue of white supremacy. During the film's premiere, racist riots were taking place in the UK, making the message of the movie even more relevant. Hoult shared, "It's a global issue at the moment, and it's a horrible situation. I hope that this film can shed more light on how these events occur and the people behind them, ultimately helping to prevent them in the future."
Law echoed Hoult's sentiment, saying, "It felt like a piece of work that needed to be made now. It's always interesting to find a piece from the past that has a relevant relationship to the present day." This relevancy is what makes The Order a must-see film for audiences.
Aside from his role in The Order, Law recently dropped a mind-blowing revelation about his popular Christmas movie, The Holiday. The iconic cottage featured in the film is not real! Law explained, "The director, being a perfectionist, toured the entire area but couldn't quite find the perfect cottage. So she had it drawn and built from scratch." And to add to the magic, the interior scenes were actually shot in LA, three months after they filmed the exterior scenes in a winter wonderland.
Meanwhile, Hoult's next project is the highly-anticipated horror film, Nosferatu, which he will be promoting on The Graham Norton Show tonight. As for The Order, it will be released in the UK on December 27, 2024. This article was first published on November 30, 2024.
