Houston's Kindred Stories Bookstore opens new location
After three and a half wonderful years in Houston's Third Ward, Kindred Stories, the beloved community bookstore, is saying goodbye to its current location and embarking on a new adventure in a bigger and brighter space at the Eldorado Ballroom, just across the street.

Since its opening, Kindred Stories has been a haven for readers looking to explore the works of Black authors. However, as the bookstore's popularity grew and it became a hub for literary events, it became clear that a larger space was needed. In a heartfelt announcement on Instagram, the Kindred Stories team expressed their excitement for this new chapter, stating that they are "proud of the ways [they] maximized [their] small space and beautiful Reading Garden." But now, it's time to move on, and they couldn't be more ready.

As Kindred Stories bids farewell to its current location at 2304 Stuart Street, the community can look forward to a grand re-opening on May 17 at the new and improved 2310 Elgin Street, Unit 2. The interior of the new space has been thoughtfully designed in collaboration with the Gin Design Group to create a welcoming and joyful atmosphere for all visitors. But before the official re-opening, Kindred Stories is offering a sneak peek during a soft opening from May 10-16. This is a special treat for the community and a chance to see the space before anyone else.

The Kindred Stories team has been hard at work over the last few months, creating a space that truly reflects the vibrant and diverse community of Houston. They are grateful to all who have supported them thus far and are excited to continue to serve the community in their new location. As store manager Chaneka Williams shared, the location has always been a significant factor in the bookstore's success. It was carefully chosen with the community in mind, ensuring that the bookstore would draw in a diverse audience.

Despite opening during a global pandemic, Kindred Stories has thrived, offering a variety of books on poetry, essays, cooking, arts and culture, history, horror, wellness, and more. But it's not just a bookstore; it's a community space that celebrates the stories of Black authors and marginalized voices. Every book on the shelves is written by a Black author or other marginalized voice, and every display highlights a unique aspect of Black storytelling and craft.

As Kindred Stories settles into its new home, the team invites the community to show their support by attending events, signing up for the newsletter, or purchasing books in bulk through their website or Book Shop. And don't forget to visit the new location at 2310 Elgin Street, Unit 2. The bookstore will resume its full schedule next month.

In a world where bookstores are becoming increasingly rare, Kindred Stories is a shining beacon, not just for its literary offerings but for the community it has built. It's a safe haven for readers to explore and celebrate Black literature, and it's a space for all to come together and share in the joy of storytelling. So let's show our support for this incredible bookstore and help it continue to thrive in its new home.
