StylesVille Barbershop & Beauty Salon, a beloved establishment in the San Fernando Valley, recently received a prestigious honor from the city of Los Angeles. This iconic barbershop, which has been a staple in the community since 1957, was officially declared a historic cultural monument by the Los Angeles County.
According to a report by The Los Angeles Times, StylesVille was first opened by Freddie and Ollie Carter in the vibrant Pacoima neighborhood. Over the years, this family-owned business has become a symbol of resilience and success within the Black community. Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, who represents Pacoima, proudly announced the proclamation, stating, “We are marking and permanently protecting StylesVille and documenting its rightful place in history as the oldest Black-owned business in the city of Los Angeles. I’m incredibly proud to be here to help celebrate this moment with the entire family, and with our proud community that wants to continue to uplift these voices each and every day.”
Nella Carter, the 75-year-old daughter of Fred and Ollie, shared that her parents first opened StylesVille in a different location across the street. However, in 1977, they moved the shop to its current location where it has flourished ever since. Before it became StylesVille, the shop was known as the Dew Drop Inn, a popular spot for music lovers. But when the Carters took over, they transformed it into a beauty salon. Later on, they even expanded and opened a barbershop next door.
In an interview with the media, Nella revealed that only one other business remains from the time when her parents first opened StylesVille: a pawn shop a few blocks away. However, it is no longer owned by the original owner. Today, StylesVille is run by Ollie, with the help of her grandson Gregory Faucett, who is the head barber at the shop. As reported by Fox 11 Los Angeles, Ollie shared, “Everybody knows about StylesVille. We’ve been here too long. And it’s been a good thing; it has not been a bad thing. Everything about StylesVille is good.” She also joked, “If these walls could talk. I got stories for you, but that’s just like when you go to your therapist, they keep everything to themself, so I don’t tell nobody’s business.”
For those looking to visit this historic landmark, StylesVille is located at 13161 Van Nuys Boulevard. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning more about the rich history of the Black community in Los Angeles. This recognition is a testament to the enduring legacy of StylesVille and its important role in the city's cultural landscape.
