Days after communal clashes in Nuh, a town in Haryana, left six people dead and caused massive destruction to public and private property, several Hindu outfits held a “Maha Panchayat” in Palwal on Sunday. This was in response to the attack on a Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal procession known as “Braj Mandal Yatra” on the 31st of July in the Muslim-dominated district.

Curfew and Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in Nuh, allowing only limited relaxations, and prohibitory orders for the assembly of four or more persons are still in effect. The Maha Panchayat, which was originally scheduled to take place in Kira village, was eventually held in Pondri village following the police’s refusal of permission due to the law and order situation. The police also allowed an assembly of only 500 people and put a ban on hate speeches.

The Hindu outfits have announced their intention to resume the Yatra on August 28th, from Nalhar Shiv Temple to Firozpur Jhirka’s Jhir and Singar temples. They have also demanded an investigation by the National Investigation Agency, Rs 1 crore for the families of the deceased, Rs 50 lakh for the injured, and compensation for the damaged property. They also proposed merging Nuh district with Palwal and Gurugram districts, and holding the trials outside of Nuh.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar commented on the Maha Panchayat’s decisions, saying that he had always appealed to all sections of the society to maintain social harmony and that Rajasthan police must act against the guilty cow vigilante.

In the wake of the violence, schools in Nuh district have been shut down since then. However, they are set to reopen today, with visuals of the town recovering surfacing. The death toll for the Nuh violence stands at six, with two Home Guards, a Naib Imam, and three youths among them. Several other people, including police personnel, have been grievously injured. Sudarshan News Editor was arrested for an “inflammatory” post on the violence, though the TV channel claims that he was abducted from Gurugram.
