A man who had gone missing while hiking in western Canada has been found alive after spending 50 days alone in the frozen wilderness. Sam Benastick was discovered by two workers on their way to work near the remote Redfern-Keily Provincial Park, which is located about 250km north-west of the city of Fort St John in British Columbia.
The workers immediately took the missing hiker to the hospital, where police were able to confirm his identity as Benastick. He had embarked on a solo camping trip in the park on October 7, but failed to return home on his expected return date of October 17. Concerned for his safety, his family reported his disappearance to the authorities.
According to authorities, Benastick, an avid outdoors enthusiast, told his rescuers that he had initially stayed in his car for a few days before eventually making his way to a mountainside creek. He then spent around 10 to 15 days camping near the creek before deciding to move down the valley and build a camp and shelter in a dry creek bed. Eventually, he was able to flag down the two workers on Tuesday, who recognized him as the missing hiker and drove him to safety.
The RCMP spokesperson, Corporal Madonna Saunderson, expressed relief and joy at finding Sam alive, as there were fears that he may not have survived after being missing for so long. The search for Sam had been ongoing, with search and rescue teams, as well as police dogs, being deployed to help find him. However, no sign of him had been found until now.
Prior to his disappearance, it was believed that Sam had been carrying a tarp, a black Osprey backpack, and other supplies with him on his excursion. It was also reported that he may have been using a Honda dirt bike in the park. The Redfern-Keily Provincial Park is known for its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, but it can also be treacherous, especially during the colder months. In fact, temperatures in the region had recently dropped below -20 degrees, making it even more challenging for Sam to survive.
Thankfully, Sam was able to make it through his ordeal and was reunited with his loved ones. The community and authorities are grateful for the successful outcome and are reminding everyone to always be prepared and exercise caution when venturing into the wilderness.
