According to the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), heatwave conditions are expected to persist in the interior and western districts of Odisha until June 10, despite the arrival of the south-west monsoon. In a statement released on Thursday, CEC Director Sarat Chandra Sahu explained that the models indicate a delayed onset of the monsoon in Odisha and nearby regions, while hot winds from the north-western part of the country are expected to continue for at least another week.
Sahu also mentioned that there will be higher moisture content in the atmosphere over the coastal plains, which will cause discomfort for the residents. He added that there is a possibility of norwesters, locally known as Kalbaisakhi, in the city of Bhubaneswar and its surrounding areas in the next couple of days. The monsoon has already arrived in Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar islands, and the north-eastern states, resulting in an accumulation of moisture over Odisha.
The CEC Director further stated that there may be sporadic occurrences of norwesters in coastal Odisha and its adjoining districts in the next few days, which will help to remove excess moisture from the atmosphere and reduce the discomfort level. On the other hand, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that today, 19 locations in Odisha recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, with 12 stations recording temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius. The town of Jharsuguda in Western Odisha recorded the highest temperature of 47 degrees Celsius, followed by Titlagarh, Bargarh, and Sambalpur with temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius.
The scorching heat has made life difficult for the residents of Western Odisha, forcing them to stay indoors during the day. According to IMD sources, the prevailing dry conditions in the state and the strengthening of northwesterly dry winds in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere are causing the maximum temperature to be 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal in the interior districts of Odisha. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 44 to 46 degrees Celsius in some places, with isolated severe heatwave conditions in certain districts.
In addition, due to the absence of any major weather systems and the presence of high humidity in lower levels, hot and humid conditions are expected to continue in coastal Odisha for the next three days. However, the IMD has forecasted the formation of a north-south trough around June 1, which could trigger thunderstorm activity in some coastal and adjoining districts of Odisha. The IMD has advised people to take precautionary measures while going outside during the peak hours of 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the next three days.
