Help is on the way as rescue teams and officials respond to the landslides in Wayanad.
The state government of Kerala has sprung into action after receiving reports of devastating landslides in the hilly district of Wayanad. The district has been severely affected, with several areas, such as Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages, being cut off. The situation is dire and requires immediate rescue efforts.

In response, the government has dispatched multiple National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, along with two helicopters, to the affected areas. State Revenue Minister K Rajan has confirmed that one team of NDRF is already working to clear the debris and create access to Mundakkai. Additionally, three more teams from Kollam, Arakkonam, and Bengaluru are en route to the site.

Rajan explained that Mundakkai, located at the foothills of a nearby mountain, is facing a major challenge due to the destruction of a bridge. The NDRF teams are currently working on constructing a temporary bridge to facilitate the rescue operation. The extent of the damage is yet to be determined, but efforts are underway to assess the situation.

In the meantime, the rescue teams are facing several obstacles, such as the Chaliyar river being flooded and bodies being recovered downstream. Rajan revealed that nearly 70 people have been admitted to various hospitals in Kozhikode, with at least 12 casualties reported so far. Ministers Rajan, P A Mohammed Riyas, and O Kelu are expected to reach Wayanad soon to oversee the rescue efforts, while Minister A K Saseendran has already arrived and is visiting the injured. Another state Minister, Ramachandran Kadannappally, has also reached the site.

The government has set up multiple call centres and control rooms to coordinate the rescue operation. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has held a high-level meeting to evaluate the situation and has personally visited the State Disaster Management Authority office to assess the magnitude of the disaster.

District Collector Meghasree D R has confirmed that disaster relief work is ongoing in the affected areas, and various government agencies, including the NDRF, Fire force, police, Forest, Revenue, and Local Self-government departments, are working together to carry out rescue operations. In addition, the efforts of volunteers and local residents are also crucial in this time of crisis.

As a precautionary measure, several families have been moved to temporary shelters or the homes of their relatives. The district authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and providing necessary aid to the affected population. The government is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens and will continue to provide all possible assistance in this time of need.
