Harry Maguire is glad that he chose to stay at Manchester United, as he has been a regular starter in their team of late. He had been made available for transfer in the summer, and a move to West Ham had seemed likely, but the deal ultimately fell through as Maguire could not agree to terms with the club.
At one point, it looked like Maguire would be spending another season on the sidelines, but due to injuries and fitness issues with Manchester United's other centre-backs, he is now back and looking good. He started in their 1-0 win over Luton on Saturday and is happy with his performance and the decision to stay at the club.
When asked if his decision to stay has been proven right, Maguire said: "Of course. I played quite a few games last year - 16 or 17 starts. I felt like I performed really well, but I just didn't have the amount of starts that I wanted. I had two or three chances last year to get a run of games in, but due to illness and injuries I was unable to do so. We have four or five top international centre-backs and the competition for places is really hard."
Maguire's form has not been all brilliant, however, as he was part of the team that lost 4-3 to FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. He commented on this, saying: "There was a lot of talk about me as I wasn't playing games. I was playing well for my country at the World Cup, so I knew my form was there, but I was up against some really good centre-backs and I just didn't get enough opportunities to prove myself to the manager. This club demands competition for places and that's what we've got."
