Gregg Wallace explains why the 2023 Celebrity MasterChef winner was a one-time event.
This year's celebrity winner of the popular BBC show Celebrity MasterChef is one of a kind, and Gregg Wallace couldn't agree more. Wynne Evans, a Go Compare star, beat out Love Island's Luca Bish and Emmerdale actress Amy Walsh to win the 2023 series.

The finale saw the trio of finalists prepare a flawless three-course meal to impress judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode. Wynne's impressive performance was enough to receive the coveted winner's title.

Following the result, Gregg Wallace suggested that Wynne was an unique and one-of-a-kind winner for the celebrity version of MasterChef. ‘Wynne gives us theatre. I have never seen a celebrity like him ever before and I’m not sure we ever will again,’ he said. To back up Gregg's statement, Wynne's dishes were certainly something to behold.

His starter was a Carmarthen-Japanese sumo tuna tartare with avocado, edamame beans and wasabi, served with deep-fried cockle popcorn and a mango egg. For his main course, Wynne served a bread of Evans cannon of lamb, served on samphire with wild garlic, porcini mushrooms and lamb rendered fried bread, with pomme dauphine and a fondant leek, finished with a red wine and red currant jus. As for his dessert, Wynne made Bara Brith with Caerphilly cheese and fig jam, served with brie ice cream on crumbled Bara Brith and poached figs.

John Torode was also impressed by Wynne's dishes, noting that it tells a story. ‘His food, it’s exciting, it’s ambitious, and it’s got a little bit of artistic flare. He’s a proud Welshman with a big heart.’ Wynne himself was also overjoyed with his win. ‘The experience has totally changed my life. It has just been beautiful. When you start to believe in yourself, that’s when good things start to happen.’

Wynne Evans is certainly a celebrity chef to remember! It's Wynne's time to shine, have you been backing Wynne to win? Don't forget to catch Celebrity MasterChef on BBC iPlayer.
