A Georgia grand jury investigating former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election recommended charges against 39 people. This is much larger than the 19 people, including Trump, whom Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had charged under the state's anti-racketeering law.
The nine-page unredacted report released by the grand jury on Friday recommended charges against former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, former Georgia GOP senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, Trump's adviser Boris Epshteyn, and lawyers Cleta Mitchell and Lin Wood.
According to the report, the grand jury did not contain any election law experts nor criminal lawyers. However, it noted that the majority of the grand jury used their collective best efforts to attend every session, listen to every witness, and attempt to understand the facts as presented and the laws as explained.
In response to the grand jury report, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize it. He wrote that it had "ZERO credibility" and "badly taints Fani Willis and this whole political Witch Hunt." Trump also noted that the jurors had essentially wanted to indict anyone who happened to be breathing at the time. He added that it undermined the credibility of the findings and had hurt the great state of Georgia.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney had in February delayed the release of the list of people to protect their due process rights. This gives more reason for the public to be cautious in interpreting the grand jury's recommendations.
