Goyal & Kharge traded accusations in Rajya Sabha during debate on Manipur issue.
The monsoon session of the Parliament saw heated exchanges between the Leader of the House Piyush Goyal and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday. The opposition was demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a discussion over the Manipur issue under rule 267. Members of the Congress and other like-minded parties raised slogans "Manipur, Manipur" as soon as the House met at noon.

Kharge questioned the absence of Modi in the House and said, "When so many people want to talk about this, why are they not ready to talk? Why Modi 'sahab' does not come here and explain the situation?" He further added that the Prime Minister talks about East India Company outside the House but is not ready to talk about Manipur in the House.

Goyal countered Kharge by saying that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is ready to have a discussion on the issues related to the atrocities on women in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and West Bengal. He also said, “This is a sensitive issue and shows some sincerity on this. Be sensitive towards women. You are not sensitive towards women.”

Goyal further stated, “We want to highlight the atrocities against women. We want to highlight what is happening in Manipur, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. We are concerned about what is happening in the country. We want the state governments to be accountable.” He added that if the opposition has points, then they should start the discussion and not disrupt the House.

Tensions rose further with both sides accusing each other. Goyal accused the opposition of not being sensitive towards women and spoiling the future of the youth of the country. Kharge countered him by saying that the government should not politicise the issue and should be more sensitive towards women.

The chairman of the House had to eventually adjourn the Rajya Sabha proceedings till 2 pm. The opposition continued protesting outside the Parliament all night in support of the Manipur issue. It remains to be seen what action the government takes in response to the protests.
