Government Primary Schools Bandh on June 9; Teachers protest

Madikeri, July 1; Karnataka State Elementary School Teachers Union district, unit President, HS Chetan, said that there will be a massive protest, by closing of the government primary schools, across the district on July 9. He was urging the state government to fulfil the demands of the primary school teachers and to save the government schools.

Speaking to media representatives, here, on Monday, he said that  earlier the Primary School Teachers Union had found a solution to many problems with the help of the government. But, in recent years, the government and the department officials have accused them of neglecting primary school teachers.

The Gazette Notification issued by the State Government recently, stated that, graduate primary school teachers who were appointed before 2014 were eligible to teach only grades 1 to 5. Fearing that 50% of primary school teachers would be considered “additional teachers”, they fear that they may lose their jobs.

Graduate primary school teachers should be considered as graduate elementary school teachers, who are performing their duties, in primary schools. For the past three years, the transfer process of teachers has come to a standstill, resulting in many teachers having problems.

He said one teacher should be considered for each subject by correcting the shortcomings in the teachers' extra procedures. When identifying the ratio of teachers and students, additional procedures should be made, including the headmasters. According to the recommendations of the final report of the Sixth Pay Commission, the headmasters should be given a gap of 5 years and there should be a provision for promotion up to the post of deputy director, for primary school teachers.

LKG and UKG should be started in all primary schools in the state to address the shortage of children in government schools. It should also allow children of the poorest of the society to learn, in the English medium. Chetan said that, if this were implemented, there would be no private schools in the state in the coming years. During the natural disaster in the district, state government employees of the state paid around Rs 104 crore, he added.
