The Putnam County community was left in shock and disbelief when 16-year-old Baylee Holbrook died two days after being struck by lightning while hunting with her father. Late afternoon Tuesday, Baylee and her dad were hunting in Florida when a lightning bolt struck a nearby tree, hitting them both.
Despite the attempts of her father to revive her, Baylee passed away peacefully in the presence of her family the morning after the incident. High school student Baylee was incredibly passionate about hunting, and could often be seen smiling while carrying a compound bow and hoisting a large alligator’s head.
The Putnam County community responded with an outpouring of support and prayers for Baylee and her family. Students, faculty, and law enforcement gathered at the Palatka Junior-Senior High School flag pole to pray for a miracle. The sheriff’s office wrote that Baylee “has proven a fighter and our prayers extend to her, her family and friends”.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents that the forecast for the next few days includes lightning, thunder, and rain, and that storms could approach quickly and lightning could strike up to 10 miles away from rainfall. They urged residents to keep Baylee’s family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate the difficult road ahead of them, and to respect their privacy.
