The National Civil Rights Museum is excited to celebrate the third year of Juneteenth as a federal holiday! On this special occasion, the museum is inviting all visitors to join us for a Community Day with free admission. This is our way of honoring the holiday's roots and significance, as well as the stories of determination and sacrifice that have led to universal liberation.

As stated in our official press release, our focus for this year's Community Day is on health equity. We want to make it easier for communities of color to access important health resources and dismantle the societal biases that have hindered their access to quality care. We believe that by promoting health and wellness, we are also promoting freedom and empowerment.

Our president, Dr. Russ Wigginton, stressed the connection between freedom and economic empowerment. He stated, "In today's terms, we see that freedom is directly tied to economic empowerment. As individuals, our health is our wealth." This sentiment reinforces our mission to create positive social change and inspire action.

We are proud to have various community partners join us for this special day. The Tennessee NFL Alumni Association, in collaboration with TN CEAL at Meharry Medical College, will provide information on healthy lifestyles, free vaccinations, screenings, and giveaways. Vitalant will also be hosting a blood drive, and we are honored to have the Methodist Sickle Cell Center and the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee raise awareness and offer resources related to sickle cell anemia, a genetic condition that disproportionately affects Black people in the U.S.

In addition, the Alpha Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will be present to assist with voter registration and provide information about voter eligibility. From 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, guests can enjoy food trucks, family-friendly activities, a live DJ, and live radio remotes. We will also have recorded messages highlighting the importance of Juneteenth throughout the day.

Located at the historic Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was tragically assassinated, the National Civil Rights Museum serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights. Our goal is to chronicle the American civil rights movement and inspire action to create positive social change.

Thanks to the generous support of Ford Philanthropy, we are able to offer free admission on a first-come basis for Juneteenth Community Day. Don't forget to tune in to WLOK, who will be broadcasting live from the museum from 10:00 AM to noon. We hope to see you there as we celebrate this important holiday and honor the recipients of the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award, Dr. Clayborne Carson, Stacey Abrams, and Kerry Kennedy.
