At around 1:30am today, emergency services were called to assist a boat that was in distress off the coast of Wimereux, a coastal town in the Pas-de-Calais region. Sadly, the bodies of four individuals, believed to be of Syrian or Iraqi origin, have been recovered. One body was discovered near the Hotel Atlantic at approximately 2:30am. Another passenger was rushed to Boulogne-sur-Mer hospital after experiencing a cardiac arrest.
The English Channel is notoriously cold, with temperatures reaching a frigid 10°C in the early hours of the morning. As one passenger recounted to Voix du Nord, they "drowned right away." Thankfully, 71 people, including 10 children, were rescued from the French side of the English Channel during the overnight rescue efforts. However, as of 6am local time, 20 of the migrants, including 17 men, two children, and a pregnant woman, are being treated for hypothermia.
