A former police officer in Florida has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for a misdeed which was caught on video. Jordy Martel, who was employed at the Miami Gardens Police Department at the time of the incident, was convicted in June on misdemeanor charges of battery and trespassing for his role in the arrest of Safiya Satchell. The incident took place three years ago on January 14, 2020 in front of Tootsie’s Cabaret in Miami.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez, who sentenced the 33-year-old, stated that “this is a case of abuse of authority.” Satchell, who was present in court on August 30, shared that she has been mentally and physically changed due to Martel’s actions and that she “will never be the same.” However, she expressed that she believed justice was served, as Martel will be spending time in jail and completing 250 hours of community service. This community service will involve speaking to students at schools. Martel will also be on probation for 18 months after the completion of the service.
Safiya Satchell’s attorney, Jonathan Jordan, declared that the jury and the court have sent a message that it is not okay for an officer to “rip a woman out of her car, and throw her on the ground and Tase her for doing nothing wrong.” The video of the incident, which was filmed by a bystander, showed Martel dragging Satchell out of her car and using a Taser to stun her twice while another police officer held her arm as she struggled to free herself. At the time, Satchell was four months pregnant and later suffered a miscarriage. Martel also filed a false police report in relation to the evening’s events.
It is clear that this sentence is just one step towards justice and that further action is necessary in order to prevent this from happening again. BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported that a Florida police officer had to resign after pointing a gun at a pregnant Black woman in front of her children. It is essential that police brutality is taken seriously and that those who commit such acts are held accountable.
