Former GTA head Dan Houser recruits staff from Immortals Of Aveum to join his new studio.
Unfortunately, the highly anticipated game Immortals Of Aveum did not meet expectations and fell short of success. As a result, many of the team members who worked on the project have moved on to a new studio called Absurd Ventures. This includes the game's director, Bret Robbins.

Immortals Of Aveum was a major financial failure last year, leading to the layoff of almost half of the staff at Ascendant Studios, the developer behind the game. Just a month after its release, reports surfaced that an additional 40 employees were furloughed, leaving the actual number of remaining staff members at Ascendant unclear. In April 2023, it was reported that over 100 people were employed at the studio.

Bret Robbins, who co-founded Ascendant Studios and served as the director for Immortals Of Aveum, has now announced that he has joined Absurd Ventures, a company founded by former Rockstar Games boss Dan Houser. Robbins will be leading a new studio under Absurd Ventures called Absurd Marin, based in San Rafael, California. Prior to his time at Ascendant, Robbins was known for his work as creative director on the original Dead Space game and for his contributions to the Call of Duty series at Sledgehammer Games.

According to a spokesperson for the studio, around 20 developers from the core team behind Immortals Of Aveum have joined Absurd Marin. The team is expected to continue growing as they work on an upcoming story-driven adventure game based on a yet-to-be-announced IP. This project is separate from Absurd Ventures' previously announced title set in the new A Better Paradise universe, which has recently been adapted into an audio fiction series.

In addition to their game projects, Absurd Ventures also produces graphic novels and multimedia content. Their founder, Dan Houser, is best known for co-founding Rockstar Games with his brother and for his work as lead writer on popular game franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne. Houser formed Absurd Ventures in June of last year.

When asked about the move to Absurd Ventures, Bret Robbins stated, "We love the focus on storytelling and world building at Absurd Ventures. We are thrilled to team up and bring our combined expertise to work on an original game set in an incredibly fun new universe."

It is currently unclear if Ascendant Studios will continue to operate with a new CEO following Robbins' departure. The studio was originally formed in partnership with businessman Brian Sheth, who may still be involved.

Fans of Absurd Ventures can also enjoy their recently released audio fiction series, A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath, available on platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music. The studio's Twitter account also encourages followers to sign up for their newsletter and engage with them on social media.
