Today, five former Metropolitan Police officers pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates Court to sending grossly offensive racist messages on WhatsApp.

Peter Booth, 66, of Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, the oldest of the five, retired from the Met in April 2001. He entered a guilty plea to four counts of sending by public communication grossly offensive racist messages. Meanwhile, Robert Lewis, 62, of Camberley, Surrey, who retired from the Met in May 2015, pleaded guilty to eight counts of sending by public communication grossly offensive racist messages.

The remaining officers included Anthony Elsom, 67, of Bournemouth, Dorset, who pleaded guilty to three counts of sending by public communication grossly offensive racist messages, and Alan Hall, 65, of Stowmarket, Suffolk, who entered guilty pleas to three counts of sending by public communication grossly offensive racist messages. The youngest of the five, Trevor Lewton, 65, of Swansea, South Wales, pleaded guilty to one count of sending by public communication grossly offensive racist messages. He retired from the Met in August 2009.

The messages sent included derogatory remarks about Meghan Markle. Following the officers’ pleas, the court will now proceed to sentencing.
