January 1st 2024.
Spectacular fireworks lit up the sky in London and Edinburgh as thousands of people gathered to bring in the new year throughout the UK. People flocked to the banks of the Thames in London and the Princes Garden Street Party and Concert in Edinburgh to begin the celebrations.
As midnight struck, fireworks exploded around the London Eye and The Elizabeth Tower, alongside drones lighting up the night sky. The soundtracked featured chart-topping music from artists like the Spice Girls, The Kinks, Dua Lipa and Eurodance classic Freed from Desire. Londoners were also treated to a tribute to the NHS at 75 and a celebration of Windrush.
In Edinburgh, the event was organised by UniqueAssembly and City of Edinburgh Council and was headlined by Pulp, who haven't played in the city for 20 years. Following their set, fireworks began at midnight and ended around 00.50am on Monday.
Alex MacDonald, 26, said he was most excited for Pulp and the fireworks, adding, "The fireworks will be phenomenal man. It'll be brilliant. We'll have a heavy bevy to that, ken what I'm saying?" Dave Reed, also 26, said he was looking forward to the tunes and the fireworks, saying, "That's what Edinburgh is all about, and that's what Hogmanay is all about."
Al Thomson, co-director of UniqueAssembly, commented on the sell-out event, saying, "We're in for one hell of a party now. Fifty thousand people in the streets of Edinburgh enjoying good music, good company, and one of the best fireworks displays in the world – there's no better way to start the new year."
Charlie Watts posted on Twitter, "#LondonNYE #LondonFireworks pic.twitter.com/Lnrj6L5ivP Love it!" London really does have the best firework display in the world!
The celebrations were certainly unforgettable as the UK rang in the new year with style. Hopefully, the start of 2024 brings good fortune and joy to all!
