The Strokes were set to kick off the bank holiday weekend in London with a bang at Victoria Park’s All Points East gig, but unfortunately, their headlining set was not quite the show they had hoped for. As the crowd of eager ticketholders and VIP guests including Taron Egerton, Joe Cole and Kelly Jones braved the pouring rain and made their way to the east stage, the American five-piece began to play.
The crowd erupted into screams as the band appeared on the stage’s two massive screens and then quickly shifted to concern as the sound of the first chord of What Ever Happened? came out too quiet. Fans screamed, ‘Turn it up’, and disappointedly asked their neighbors if they could hear the music coming from the speakers. The band attempted to raise their voices and the volume, but despite their best efforts, the sound problems persisted.
Morale in the crowd remained high as they sang along to one of the band’s most popular tracks, Juice Box, and other classics. However, as the setlist rolled on, the crowd began to thin out due to the sound issues. Julian attempted to chat with the crowd and get feedback, but his words were lost in the noise.
Finally, Reptilia promised to be the last song on the menu for the evening, but two encores were played before the band retired. The migration towards Mile End tube stop had already begun as the crowd appeared more interested in their nightly commute than the chords of Hard To Explain and Is This It.
For all their best efforts, The Strokes were washed out by Britain’s weather and an uncooperative sound system, leaving their fans disappointed and their headlining set at All Points East a bust. The Agency contacted The Strokes’ reps for comment, but have yet to hear back.
