The Hutchinson family from Corby, Northamptonshire, were recently featured on DIY SOS. The family worked alongside TV personality Nick Knowles and his team, who helped modify their home to support their teenage son Jordan, who suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
However, after the episode aired, the family were subjected to vile trolling online. Jackie Hutchinson, the mother of the family, told MailOnline: "A few people who had been working on our home and wanted their five minutes of fame started targeting our family on social media, suggesting we were a bit of a con!"
The trolls accused the family of being on benefits and selling their house to move to Dubai, which Jackie denies. She said the trolling was a nightmare for her family, who had initially hailed the experience as the "best thing they ever did".
The family were subjected to many hateful messages and comments on social media, and were advised to disable their accounts. Jackie said she was thankful the BBC stepped in to protect them.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the popular daytime show has encountered issues. Peter Chapman and his Cheltenham-based family filmed the show in February 2020 but have since found the home inadequate.
A BBC spokesperson said: "DIY SOS is a heart-warming programme that brings communities together and helps improve the lives of those in need thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to participate."
DIY SOS is streaming on BBC iPlayer for anyone who wants to watch and experience the transformative power of the show. Despite the trolling the Hutchinson family faced, Jackie said the experience was still overwhelmingly positive and changed their lives for the better.
