Florin Maracinenu, 34, and Ana Diaconu, 30, were stunned when a black BMW careened into their home in Grays, Essex on Christmas Day morning. Florin and Ana were in the bedroom above the room that was destroyed when they heard a loud noise and felt the bed shake. With the smell of gas engulfing the house, they quickly grabbed their two children, aged two and nine, and fled.
"I still can't believe it. We are so lucky that no one was in the room, otherwise they would be dead," Ana said.
The aftermath of the accident left rubble strewn across the family's front garden and firefighters had to put up support beams at the scene. An 18-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving but has since been released on bail.
The couple and their two children are now without a home and neighbours have been helping them out with temporary places to stay.
"We're gonna stay tonight and tomorrow but we need to go somewhere," Ana said. "The insurance company has offered us a hotel but we have two kids. They need food and clothes and toys."
Meanwhile, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, an astonishing scene was unfolding. A navy blue Vauxhall was wedged into the front wall of a bungalow, lodged into the brickwork and held aloft by the wall. The glass window that was damaged in the smash had been boarded up around the outside edge of the vehicle and it seemed the car was rather stuck.
