According to authorities, a family from Victoria found themselves in the middle of a terrifying situation last night in western Sydney. The family, who were seeking refuge during a woman's separation from her husband, were caught up in a series of shootings that left the community shaken.
It all started at around 10pm when the police were alerted to a home on Antwerp Street in Auburn. Reports had come in that shots had been fired into the house during a domestic incident. Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden shared that inside the home at the time were a couple in their 70s, their 50-year-old daughter, and her two children - a 20-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl.
It was later revealed that the shooter, a 50-year-old man, was the woman's husband of 23 years and the father of her children. McFadden explained that the family from Victoria had recently left their home and sought shelter in Sydney as part of a planned separation from the husband. However, the shooter had also made his way up to Sydney and arrived at the home filled with rage.
In a desperate attempt to enter the house, he smashed the front window and pointed a handgun at the man in his 70s. Thankfully, the gun failed to fire. He then turned the gun towards the woman in her 70s and pulled the trigger, but the shot missed. The shooter then fled the scene and tried to carjack a 56-year-old woman, but she was able to escape and report the incident to the police.
But the night was far from over. Just ten minutes later, the police received another report of a shooting by the same man. This time, it was on Mona Street in Auburn. A 55-year-old man and his 15-year-old daughter were sitting in their car when they were confronted by the shooter. He fired a shot at the man, hitting him in the neck. Fortunately, the man was able to escape and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
After a thorough search of the area, the police discovered the body of a man on the bank of Duck Creek in Auburn. They also found a gun at the scene, which was seized for forensic examination. McFadden confirmed that the body was that of the 50-year-old shooter. He also shared that the man had a history with the police in New South Wales back in 1989-1990, but there had been no interactions with him in Victoria for the past 10 years.
Although the investigation is ongoing, the police do not believe that the man had a license to carry the gun. At this time, his death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. The police have assured the public that there is no ongoing risk, and support is available for those affected by this tragic event.
