Exelon CEO and XCEL honoree Calvin Butler discusses legacy and leadership

Exelon CEO Calvin Butler gave an emotional acceptance speech on the evening of Oct. 21 to attendees at the highly anticipated 2026 Black Enterprise XCEL Summit for Men. During his remarks, Butler spoke about his family legacy, corporate mentorship, and the values that have guided him throughout his career.

“The first thing I thought about was my parents,” Butler said, referring to a tribute video played during the ceremony. He reflected on the loss of his mother at 47 and his father at 67. Butler shared that he was the first college graduate in his family and said his personal journey played a major role in his professional success.

He noted that he now leads the same energy company where his father spent his entire career working at a power plant outside Springfield, Illinois. As the first Black CEO of Exelon Corporation, Butler used the moment to underscore the lasting influence of mentorship and the importance of minority representation in executive leadership across America’s energy industry. He stressed the value of corporate guidance and community investment, crediting his rise at Exelon to the support of his family, mentors within the company, and the bonds of fraternity brotherhood.

He also connected business leadership with social responsibility, saying that success at the executive level comes with a responsibility to help expand minority representation and invest in local communities. “Politics will change, attitudes will change,” Butler said. “But who we are, our value system must remain consistent...

shame on me if I don’t take the opportunity to invest in others.” Butler closed his speech by sharing his long-term goal for his time at Exelon Corporation: to leave behind a legacy of empowering others and creating a lasting social impact throughout the energy sector.
