A former Wallabies player and his wife are expressing their heartfelt gratitude towards the generous blood donors who played a vital role in saving their three-year-old daughter's life. Little Charli McCabe has been bravely battling leukemia for the past 15 months, relying heavily on blood transfusions to help her through the intense treatment.
Pat McCabe and his wife Tammy shared that it was an incredibly challenging time for their family, watching their daughter go through such a difficult journey. Charli received 24 blood transfusions during her treatment, which her parents say were crucial in her road to recovery. Pat even opened up about the eye-opening experience of witnessing the resilience of young patients at the Sydney Children's Hospital.
The couple also shared their immense pride in their daughter's strength and courage throughout the ordeal. Charli underwent chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and received stem cells from a boy overseas, whose frozen umbilical cord proved to be a perfect match. Although they don't know the identity of the donor, Tammy made sure to send out a heartfelt thank you to the young boy, now 13 years old and living a healthy life.
The McCabes are well aware of the importance of blood donation, with Charli alone requiring 24 transfusions. They hope to raise awareness and encourage more people to donate, especially during the holiday season when blood donations tend to decrease. As Lifeblood Australia launches its Christmas donations blitz, they aim to secure enough donors to avoid any shortages over the festive period.
According to Australian Red Cross Lifeblood spokesperson Carley Byrne, the holiday season can be a challenging time for blood donations, with people's routines being disrupted and travel plans taking precedence. To ensure there is an adequate supply of blood, Lifeblood is urging 2000 donors to come forward every day until January 2nd.
It is worth noting that a significant portion of donated blood is used to make platelets for cancer and trauma patients, making every donation crucial. Currently, blood types O and A are in low supply, and the McCabes hope that their story will inspire more people to donate and help save lives like their daughter's. Thanks to the selfless act of blood donation, Charli is now out of the hospital and back to being an active and playful three-year-old.
