Ex-MLA Shekhawat leaves BJP after 55 years, joining Congress in Bhopal.
On Saturday, nearly a dozen BJP leaders joined Congress in a major event held at the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) office in Bhopal. This included sitting BJP MLA from Kolaras Virendra Singh Raghuwanshi, former BJP MLA Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat from Badnawar Assembly constituency, BSP leader Chandra Bhushan Bundela, and Prabhudayal Khatik.

The event was also attended by other leaders such as Chhedilal Pandey, Shivam Pandey from Katni, Arvind Dhakad from Shivpuri, Anshu Raghuvanshi from Guna, Keshav Yadav from Bhind and Ashish Agarwal Golu, nephew of former home minister Umashankar Gupta, Mahendra Pratap Singh from Narmadapuram who also accepted Congress party’s membership.

State Congress president Kamal Nath addressed the crowd, saying “There is no need for us to apologise to people. During our 15-month old government, we built cowsheds, waived farm loans and worked for people’s welfare. We committed no sin.” The atmosphere was electric and a huge gathering could be seen in front of the MPCC office.

Chandra Bhushan Bundela said that he was returning home after a long time. He exclaimed, “My father late Sujan Singh Bendela will be happy that his son Guddu has joined back Congress party.” He was confident that BJP would be wiped out from Bundelkhand and Kamal Nath would become the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.

Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, 72, was with the saffron party for the last 55 years and spoke about the changes he has seen. He said, “BJP has lost values and principles. The leaders who nourished BJP are being neglected. People whom I defeated in elections were bought for Rs 35 crore each. They worked to defeat me.” He also attacked union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, adding that “after Scindia and his supporters joined BJP, corruption and loot in the party has peaked. Today, BJP grassroots worker are dejected”.

Virendra Raghuwanshi also alleged that he was being harassed by the BJP ministers. He said, “The ministers loyal to Jyotiraditya ensured that no work gets done in my constituency.” He added that since new BJP leaders came in the party, the old and loyal leaders were ignored.

The event was full of emotion and joy. These BJP leaders returning to Congress was a big victory for the party and its members. It is now for the people to decide if the promises made by Congress and these leaders will be fulfilled.
