A campaign has been established to secure Historic England recognition for Bristol’s Rupert Street car park, which was built between December 1959 and October 1960 and is the UK's first lot featuring a continuous spiral ramp. Greystar, a property developer, has plans to demolish the car park and replace it with a 21-storey accommodation block offering 450 parking spaces for students and workers. However, the 20th Century Society is opposing this move by applying to list the car park as a 'classic, bold and sculptural building'. The campaigners have also suggested renovating the car park into a charging hub for electric cars as a way of helping Bristol achieve 100% ultra-low-emission-vehicle coverage by 2050 and to meet the high demand for public car-parking in the area. Mark Osborne from Alec French Architects believes that redeveloping the car park would be beneficial for the local community. Plans for the new block of flats are expected to be submitted this spring. If you have a story you'd like to share with our news team, please email us.
