Ebenezer Baptist Church honors resilience and love after tragedy with tribute to Mama King.
On June 30, 2024, we will gather at the Heritage Sanctuary of Ebenezer Baptist Church to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a tragic event that shook our community to its core. This special occasion, entitled "Faith Over Fear, Love Over Hate," will honor the lives of two beloved members of our church family, Martin Luther King Jr.'s mother, Alberta Williams King, and Deacon Edward A. Boykin, who were taken from us on that fateful day in 1974.

As we reflect on the past, let us remember the courage and faith of those who faced unimaginable violence and tragedy. It was on a Sunday, just like any other, when an armed assailant entered our church during a service. But in the midst of chaos and heartache, our beloved Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. stood strong and delivered a powerful message of love and forgiveness. His granddaughter, Dr. Angela Farris Watkins, reminds us that his words continue to inspire us today. We honor the legacies of Mama King, Deacon Boykin, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence by reaffirming our commitment to a world filled with peace and love.

Our senior pastor, Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock, shares that the enduring faith of "America's Freedom Church" and its dedication to God's Kingdom is a testament to what was not taken on that tragic day. Despite facing further adversity, such as vandalism after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Ebenezer Baptist Church remains a beacon of hope and resilience.

This commemoration event not only honors the past but also serves as a reminder of Ebenezer's ongoing legacy of faith, love, and resilience. It is a time for our community to come together in remembrance, healing, and renewed commitment to the power of faith and love over fear and hate. We are honored to have Rev. Warnock, Congresswoman Lucy McBath, members of the King family, and Leonard Dungee, CEO of Hope Hustlers, share their insights and reflections. Survivors from that tragic day will also bravely share their experiences, and the Christine King Farris Memorial Choir will offer beautiful musical tributes.

We are grateful to have the support and participation of Ebenezer Baptist Church, The King Center, The King Family, and The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in organizing this event. It is open to the public and will be live-streamed for those who cannot join us in person. The Heritage Sanctuary, located at 407 Auburn Avenue, NE, Atlanta, GA 30312, will be the site of this meaningful commemoration.

As we come together to remember the past and honor those we have lost, let us also look to the future with hope and determination. May this event serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and love in the face of fear and hate. And may we continue to build a world where all people can live together in peace.
