Emma and Jamie, who play Honey Mitchell and Jay Brown on EastEnders, are set to make history as they run the London Marathon in character. While the show has featured characters running the marathon before, this is the first time actors will actually be running the event while filming scenes live from the route on the day.
In the show, Honey and Jay are running the marathon in memory of Jay's late wife Lola, who passed away from a terminal brain tumor last year. But in real life, Emma and Jamie have chosen to support their own causes close to their hearts. Emma will be running on behalf of BBC Children in Need, while Jamie will be running for Prostate Cancer UK.
However, despite their excitement for this groundbreaking moment, Emma has revealed feeling a bit nervous ahead of the episode. "It's pretty exciting because it's never been done before!" she said. "It's a massive thing, the marathon. We're a London based show and we're doing something that's never been achieved before. So, it is very exciting. It's very nerve wracking."
This is not the first time Emma has run the marathon, as she previously did it in memory of her former co-star Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell on the show. However, Emma admits she has trained much harder this time around. "I've worked a lot harder than I did the first time round," she shared. "It was quite short notice about five years ago when I ran it, and I wasn't very strong, because I'd never really run before. So, I had issues with things like runners knee, so that hindered me a little bit - and, funnily enough, Jamie. We both sort of hobbled through it!"
As the last remaining female member of the Mitchell clan on the show, Emma also spoke about the strong women on EastEnders. "The Mitchell women are renowned for being extremely strong," she said. "We've seen some really strong sides of Honey when she's needed to, and especially when it comes to her family, that's when she really will step up. As Honey's grown over the years, we have seen that and I think she's got a good pact with Phil now. I think he suddenly got a bit more respect for her, and she has him - but I need a new phrase rather than 'Get out my pub!'"
In addition to the marathon, Emma and Jamie are also excited to support their chosen causes. And in true EastEnders fashion, they will be running in character for the show, making it a truly unique and special event.
