The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently announced their partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar for various projects involving artificial intelligence (AI) driven surveillance. During a meeting held on Tuesday, officials from both institutions gathered to discuss the collaboration. Among those present were Binay Das, the director general of DRDO's Electronics and Communication Systems (ECS) cluster, along with several senior scientists and officials.

At the meeting, nine projects from the ECS cluster were assigned to IIT Bhubaneswar, with an additional seven projects in the process of receiving funding of Rs 18 crore. These projects will focus on electronics warfare, AI-driven surveillance, power systems, radar systems, and more, according to the officials. S R Samantaray, the head of IIT Bhubaneswar's School of Electrical Sciences, expressed his excitement for this collaboration and how it will contribute to the growing research and development needs in the defence sector, ultimately contributing to the vision of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'.

This partnership between DRDO and IIT Bhubaneswar is a step towards enhancing the sustainability of defence research programs and creating a platform for nation-building, Samantaray added. On the other hand, Binay Das encouraged the researchers and faculty members involved in the DRDO-sanctioned projects to work efficiently and systematically, ensuring proper review and risk management to complete the projects within the designated time frame and come up with innovative solutions.

Das also mentioned the transformation of DRDO from being technology chasers to technology enablers and trendsetters. He expressed the organization's goal to not only achieve self-reliance but also set the standards for the Indian armed forces and others across the globe to follow. In this regard, the collaboration with IIT Bhubaneswar and the opportunity to establish a Centre of Excellence at the institute is crucial for achieving this goal, Das concluded.
