Could Dragon's Dogma 2 be the best game of 2024? A reader recently argued that it is, praising its AI-powered co-op action. I was intrigued by GameCentral's feature on their top 20 games of the year so far, as I didn't realize there had been so many great games released. While I haven't played all of them, I couldn't help but notice that Dragon's Dogma 2 was not at the top of their list.
This didn't come as a surprise, as their review of the game was not particularly glowing and they seemed to have mixed feelings about the original as well. However, for me personally, Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the best games I've ever played. It's hard to put into words exactly why I feel this way, but sometimes a game just clicks with you and you can't quite explain why.
For those who are unfamiliar with the game, it's an action role-playing game that shares similarities with titles such as Elden Ring and Skyrim. However, it has a more medieval setting, with traditional fantasy creatures like griffons and cyclopes. The game's visuals are stunning, particularly the landscapes and forests, which make me want to have a picnic there...if it weren't for all the monsters, of course.
The game's main selling point is its unique AI system, where you are accompanied by three "pawns" who act as AI co-op players. Some may be surprised to learn that there is no actual co-op option in the game, but in my opinion, that's because the AI pawns are the game's greatest feature. I find that when playing with real people, they often don't take the game seriously. They may run off and do their own thing or engage in casual conversation, which takes away from the immersive experience. With AI pawns, on the other hand, they are fully invested in the game and their actions and interactions feel more genuine.
The pawns also add a level of depth to the game that I haven't seen in other co-op or PvP games. They communicate with you like real people, offering advice and assistance both in and out of combat. They also support each other, making you feel like a true team. This, combined with the game's sandbox feel and emergent gameplay, gives it a unique and refreshing experience.
The different character classes in the game are also highly customizable, allowing you to upgrade your character and pawns in great detail. There is no right or wrong way to play the game, which is something I really appreciate. It's like a more accessible version of Elden Ring, mixed with elements of Zelda and party-based role-playing games.
I understand that Dragon's Dogma 2 may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, it's not only the best game of the year so far, but also ranks in my top five of all time. I highly recommend giving it a try and experiencing all that it has to offer. Who knows, it may even become your favorite game too.
