Poor little Brutus, a Staffordshire bull terrier, had quite the ordeal when he stumbled upon a porcupine den in his First Nation community in Canada. After being abandoned, the two-year-old pup was left to fend for himself and find food wherever he could.
Unfortunately, his search for a meal led him to a porcupine and his curiosity got the best of him. Despite their prickly appearance, porcupines are often targeted by hungry dogs and Brutus was no exception. In his attempt to eat the spiky creature, he ended up with over 1,500 quills embedded in his face.
Thankfully, Ashley Bard, the president of the Paws Up Program, came to his rescue and rushed him to a 24-hour vet. The poor pup had quills all over his face, including in his snout, mouth, and even his eyes. He was in such pain that seven of the quills had to be removed from his left eye, resulting in the eye being removed completely.
Ashley, who was by Brutus' side throughout the whole ordeal, shared that the poor pup had quills not just on the outside, but also inside his mouth. In his attempt to eat the porcupine, he ended up with quills in his teeth, gums, and even the roof of his mouth.
Despite all the pain he was in, Brutus remained a total sweetheart throughout the whole ordeal. He was calm and gentle, even when he still had quills embedded in his face. Ashley was amazed by his gentle nature, especially since some dogs can become aggressive when faced with such pain.
Sadly, this is not an uncommon occurrence for the Paws Up Program. As Ashley shared, they receive calls for help with porcupine quills almost every day. In fact, Brutus was the 27th dog they had helped in just two months.
Thankfully, after undergoing surgery and receiving proper care, Brutus is expected to make a full recovery. And now, he is in search of a loving forever home where he can live a happy and safe life, without the dangers of porcupines lurking around. Let's hope Brutus finds the perfect home that he deserves.
