According to People, a young woman has taken legal action against popular internet personality DJ Akademiks, accusing him of both sexual assault and defamation. The plaintiff, Fauziya Abashe, claims that Akademiks, along with two of his friends, raped her after drugging her at his home in July of 2022. Abashe is seeking damages for negligent infliction of emotional distress and defamation.
As reported by The Washington Post, Akademiks has denied these allegations and maintains that he has been cleared by the police. He also told Rolling Stone that he believes Abashe's accusations are an attempt at extortion. In response, Abashe stated, "I have faith that justice will prevail and the truth will come to light, so that no other woman will have to suffer as I did."
According to court documents obtained by People, Abashe first met Akademiks online in 2021 and they had previously dated. However, on the day of the alleged incident, they had not been in contact. Upon arriving at his residence, Abashe claims she was met by Akademiks' two friends, referred to as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2. She spoke with them briefly before they all went to Akademiks' hot tub. Abashe says that after entering the tub, she was given alcohol and quickly began to feel dizzy and disoriented.
Abashe alleges that one of the men became aggressive with her, and she was eventually thrown into a nearby pool. Throughout the night, she says she was raped by multiple men while drifting in and out of consciousness. She claims to have woken up around 4 a.m. in Akademiks' bed, where he was allegedly "brutally raping" her. It wasn't until the next morning that Abashe says she learned of the attacks, when Akademiks showed her surveillance footage of the assaults.
Abashe reported the attacks to the police, who conducted a rape kit that provided evidence of sexual assault. However, she did not publicly speak out about the incident until December 30, 2023, when Akademiks allegedly defamed her on social media. He claimed that Abashe had "voluntarily participated in an orgy" with his friends at his home, while also denying any involvement himself. According to Akademiks, he had invited a woman over after a party and forgot about it. He alleged that Abashe had consensual sexual contact with the other men.
Abashe's lawyer, Tyrone Blackburn, stated, "Legal action is always a last resort. After multiple attempts to privately resolve this matter, Ms. Abashe had no choice but to file a lawsuit. Mr. Allen's arrogance will be his downfall." The amount of restitution Abashe is seeking has not been disclosed.
In related news, it was reported that Drake confronted Akademiks over his comments about the rapper's "close friend" SZA.
