Disney honored Martha Blanding, their first Black VIP tour guide, as a Disney Legend.
Martha Blanding has certainly made her mark in Disney history, as she was the first Black VIP Tour Guide and has now been honored as a Disney Legend. Her impact on the company has been undeniable, and she was recognized for her outstanding leadership and contributions during the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony on August 11th.

Breaking barriers and setting new standards, Blanding became the first Black female leader at Disneyland Resort. This achievement was a testament to her hard work and determination throughout her five decades-long career with Disney. In a recent interview with the company, Blanding reflected on this milestone and shared her feelings about it.

"I am truly honored to have been the first Black Permanent Tour Guide, VIP Hostess, and Black female in Management at Disney," Blanding said. "It was an amazing feeling to overcome challenges and achieve success, especially since I was often the only one in those positions. My parents instilled in me the importance of always doing my best, and that's exactly what I did."

As Blanding continued to climb the ranks at Disney, she also paved the way for others. She played a pivotal role in creating a more diverse and inclusive environment for Black employees. "One of my proudest moments was being part of the growth of cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion for young Cast Members of color who came after me," she shared. Blanding was also among the founders of PULSE, the Black diversity group within Disney.

Her journey from an hourly cast member to being honored as a Disney Legend is a testament to her hard work and achievements within the parks. "I never imagined becoming a Disney Legend, so I was completely surprised when I received the call," Blanding said. "Starting as an hourly cast member and working my way up with the support of my wonderful co-workers is something I am truly proud of. It just goes to show that anyone, regardless of their starting position, can achieve greatness at Disney."

Throughout her career, Blanding has witnessed many changes at Disney, including the addition of new lands and attractions in the park. However, she is most proud of the progress made in terms of diversity and inclusion. "I have seen the evolution of BERG diversity groups and was a part of creating PULSE," she added. "It brings me joy to know that I have played a role in making Disney a more inclusive and welcoming place for all."
