Deputy on break saves woman and baby from jumping in river.
It was a normal day for a Georgia deputy until Deputy Aliyah Miller made a remarkable rescue. On August 16, Deputy Miller was out on her lunch break when she spotted a woman on the verge of jumping into the river with her two-month-old baby. The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office and Columbus Police Department had received multiple calls about the woman's plans, which she had broadcasted on Facebook Live.

Deputy Miller approached the woman and, with help from a Columbus police officer, was able to talk her out of jumping into the river. Deputy Miller then took the baby from the woman while the police officer got the mother the assistance she needed.

The deputy waited with the infant until the mother's family arrived. Not only that, but the Columbus Fire and EMS department provided an air-conditioned vehicle for the family to shelter from the heat.

Sheriff Greg Countryman was full of praise for Deputy Miller's heroic actions. In a Letter of Commendation, he commended Miller, the Columbus Police Department and Columbus Fire and EMS for their quick response. “Thanks to your quick thinking and response time, they prevented a tragedy from occurring today,” he wrote.

Deputy Miller is a shining example of going above and beyond the call of duty. The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office is proud to have such a hero in their ranks!
