Demand for compensation for crop loss due to wild elephants

Kanive, Sep. 9: Farmers of Kanive village have submitted a petition to the Forest Department demanding immediate compensation for the crop loss caused by the attack and to prevent the excessive wild elephants.

The wild elephants have invaded the sixth Hoskote, Seegehosur, Chinnenahalli, Marur, Chaingate etc. areas of the Kanive forest area. None of the crops grown are reaching our hands. Despite the huge losses, farmers Arunkumar, Lokesh, Channaiah, Shivarudrappa and others lamented that the Forest Department is not providing us with adequate compensation.

Marur village farmer H.S. Bhikshesh said that even though the entire paddy crop grown and harvested in the monsoon last year was eaten by wild elephants, he has not received a single penny of compensation till now. A plan should be formulated to permanently stop the wild elephants. The farmers demanded immediate compensation for the farmers who had suffered losses. The Sub-Divisional Forest Officer, who listened to the farmers' cries and received the petition, assured that he would bring the matter to the attention of his superiors.
