Dave Myers had always been a man who knew exactly what he wanted, even in death. In fact, he had already discussed his funeral arrangements a decade before his passing at the age of 66. The beloved star of The Hairy Bikers peacefully passed away on February 28, surrounded by his co-star Si King and his wife Liliana Orzac.
It was in 2022 when Myers was diagnosed with cancer, but even before his illness, he had already given thought to how he wanted his loved ones to say their final goodbyes. He had even planned for the day to start with some cocktails to help ease the somber atmosphere. "I'd like vodka martinis served before a church service to get everyone loosened up," he shared with Rob McGibbon for The Definite Article in the Daily Mail.
For the actual service, Myers had some specific requests in mind as well. He wanted a reading of Blake's Innocence and asked for his coffin to be carried to the song "The Best Is Yet To Come" by The Scorpions. According to him, it was "a good rock anthem to cheer everyone up." He also mentioned that he would prefer a traditional burial, as he wasn't keen on the idea of being cremated.
As for the wake, Myers wanted it to be a feast filled with meat and potato pie, chips, and some good wine to be shared among his friends and family. But more than anything, he hoped that people would remember him as "the bloke who had a go."
Myers and King had been the dynamic duo behind The Hairy Bikers, and their series The Hairy Bikers Go West was currently airing on BBC Two. In the penultimate episode, which aired just a few days before Myers' passing, he made a heartbreaking declaration while reflecting on their adventures. "It's been glorious and the motorcycling has been glorious, what can I say, it just feels so good to be alive," he told King.
King, who is 57 years old, announced the death of his best friend through a statement on Instagram and also shared his grief with their fans. "Personally, I am not sure I can put into words how I feel at the moment," he wrote in the caption. "My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can't follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you god's speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya."
Myers is survived by his wife Liliana Orzac and two step-children, Iza and Sergiu. The couple met in 2005, seven years after Myers lost his fiancé Glen Howarth to stomach cancer. Our hearts go out to Myers' family during this difficult time.
