DanceAfrica 2024 brings vibrant energy to NYC streets over Memorial Day weekend.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music's renowned DanceAfrica festival kicked off the long Memorial Day weekend with a lively celebration honoring the diverse cultural tapestry of Africa. This year, the festival shone a spotlight on the heritage of Cameroon, curated by Artistic Director Abdel R. Salaam. From May 25-27, the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House was filled with soul-stirring dance performances that left a lasting impression on all who attended. The lineup included the talented DanceAfrica Spirit Walkers, the powerful artistry of The Women Of The Calabash, and the energetic moves of The Billie's Youth Arts Academy Dance Ensemble. One of the most captivating performances was Siren: Protectors of The Rainforest, and the audience was also treated to The Origin of Communities / A Calabash of Cultures, a stunning showcase of the deep connection between dance, music, and culture.

But the festivities didn't end there. The streets of New York were transformed into a vibrant cultural marketplace for the Dance Africa Bazaar, drawing in an impressive crowd of over 30,000 visitors. According to BAM, the bazaar featured over 150 vendors and offered a taste of African, Caribbean, and African American cuisine, as well as a variety of crafts and fashion. It was a truly immersive experience that captured the essence of the festival.

In their 47th year, DanceAfrica delved into the rich history, arts, and culture of Central Africa, symbolized by the calabash - a vessel with mystical, practical, and cultural significance. This was highlighted by the multi-arts center on their YouTube channel, showcasing the deep meaning behind the festival. To further immerse themselves in Cameroonian traditions, attendees were invited to participate in a dance class, movement session, and master class, all part of DanceAfrica 2024. They also had the opportunity to engage in a thought-provoking talk with DanceAfrica Elders, who shared their reflections on the festival's history.

Founded in 1977 by the visionary Baba Chuck Davis, DanceAfrica is a celebration of the African Diaspora and holds the title of BAM's longest-running performance series. Since 2015, the festival has continued to thrive under Artistic Director Baba Abdel R. Salaam. BAM brings together the local and global artistic communities, masters, and audiences at its multi-arts center. Its diverse programming includes theater, dance, music, opera, film, and more, making it a hub for cultural exchange and appreciation.
