Cricket will be an official sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
On Monday, the International Olympic Committee announced that cricket will make its return to the multi-sport extravaganza, after 128 years, in the Los Angeles Olympics of 2028. The proposal from the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 was passed at the ongoing 141st IOC session being held in Mumbai. Along with cricket, other sports like baseball/softball, lacrosse, squash and flag football have also been included in the 2028 event.

The announcement was received with great enthusiasm as cricket is one of the most beloved sports in the world and the second most watched. It has already been included in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach expressed his delight at the inclusion of cricket, saying, “Reliance Foundation’s work exactly reflects our Olympic values and our approach”. Nita Ambani, chairperson of the Reliance Foundation and IOC board member, also welcomed the decision, saying, “As an IOC member, a proud Indian, and an ardent cricket fan, I am delighted that IOC members have voted to include Cricket as an Olympic Sport in the LA Summer Olympics 2028!”

The 141st IOC Session in Mumbai was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. It serves as a key meeting of the members of the International Olympic Committee, where important decisions regarding the future of the Olympic games are made. India is hosting the IOC session for the second time, after a gap of about 40 years. It was the 86th session that was held in New Delhi in 1983.
