Michael Hillier and Rachel Fulstow have been sentenced to prison for carrying out the brutal and cold-blooded murder of electrician Liam Smith. On November 24th, Hillier, 39, lured Smith, 38, out of his Wigan home and shot him in the face with a modified shotgun. He was also doused with acid and soda crystals.
Fulstow, 37, was Hillier's girlfriend at the time of the attack. The couple had met Mr Smith on a dating app three years prior, and Fulstow claimed that the two had had non-consensual sex at a hotel in York. However, Hillier stated that his girlfriend had confided in him that she had been raped by Smith, and the two decided to take the 'vigilante route' to seek justice.
Fulstow claimed she knew nothing of the attack until Hillier arrived at her house in Andrew Drive, York and was scared to contact the police. The court heard that following the killing, the couple went on vacation to Jamaica together.
The judge, Maurice Greene, sentenced Hillier to a minimum of 33 years and Fulstow to life in prison with a minimum term of 30 years. He stated that whatever had happened between the three of them on the night appeared to be the underlying motive for the attack. He added that Hillier and Fulstow had decided to act as judge, jury and executioner.
