Tragedy struck the small town of Granton, Edinburgh, on New Year’s Eve, when gangster Marc Webley was shot outside his local pub. The 38-year-old had been sharing videos taunting his rivals and daring them to come get him, foreshadowing the horrific incident that was to come. He later died in hospital, while another man, aged 39, was left in serious but stable condition.
The police report that two individuals were arrested in connection with the shooting. A 32-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were both apprehended at a flat in Gorgie Road and have now been charged. The officers said that the incident was an “isolated, targeted attack”, involving a red Hyundai Tucson that pulled up outside the pub, from which someone fired gunshots before fleeing.
Forensic investigators were seen searching the scene for evidence in the days after the fatal shooting, and floral tributes were left outside the pub in memory of Mr Webley. Sadly, he had a history of gang-related violence, having served eleven years in prison for attempted murder back in 2005. At the time of the incident, he was nineteen years old and had been involved in a failed gangland hit with another man by the name of James Tant. He had also been charged with trying to intimidate a man into giving him £1,000 at a garage, and was acquitted of a double murder bid in 2022.
In the lead up to his death, Mr Webley had been carrying weapons with him in anticipation of an attack. He had been in a relationship with Britain’s youngest ever Euromillions winner, Jane Park, who is thought to have ended things with him only three weeks prior to the shooting. When she heard the news, she expressed her shock and grief on Instagram, saying “We spoke yesterday. If I could cuddle you again and tell you everything is going to be okay, I would give anything to do it Marc. The months we spent together, you taught me some valuable things in life and I will never forget you. I am absolutely devastated. The best bed for you is up there.”
A report on the two people charged over Mr Webley’s alleged killing will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal. The 32-year-old man and 25-year-old woman are to appear in Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, January 8.
