Connecticut's Black Wall Street Festival returns to the New Haven Green for another year.
The second annual Black Wall Street Festival is an event that celebrates Black entrepreneurship and is set to take place on August 19th, 2023 from noon to 8 p.m. at the historic New Haven Green. The family-friendly event is organized by the Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism in partnership with The Breed Entertainment.

This festival will not only celebrate Black and Brown business owners and creatives, but it will also serve as a catalyst for action to tackle systemic racism in New Haven and to restore economic wealth to Black and Brown communities in the city.

The event will feature a variety of live music and performances from local youth groups, such as the Elite Drill Team, Wolfpack Drum Squad, the Monk Youth Jazz Ensemble, and STEAM Collective. Aspiring entrepreneurs can visit the “empowerment tent” for inspiration and guidance. Additionally, there will be a designated space for members of the Divine Nine to network and collaborate.

According to New Haven Director of Cultural Affairs, Adriane Jefferson, the festival is more than just a celebration. It is also a form of cultural preservation and equity, allowing members of the community to tell their stories and to come together in celebration.

The festival was extremely successful last year and is expected to be almost four times larger this year. The term Black Wall Street pays homage to the many Black Business districts that appeared throughout America during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, these communities were destroyed through covert tactics such as redlining and gentrification.

This festival is an opportunity to celebrate Black and Brown businesses, to restore economic wealth in New Haven, and to remember the legacy of the Black Business districts. We look forward to seeing you there!
