Colorado School of Mines' football team dominates in a blowout win against New Mexico Highlands.
After a setback that put their conference title hopes in jeopardy, the Colorado School of Mines football team wasted no time getting back on track. In a dominating performance, the 18th-ranked Orediggers crushed New Mexico Highlands 56-21 on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas. They ran for a whopping 491 yards and didn't even have to punt once.

Leading the charge was Braelon Tate, a standout from Legacy High, who rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. But he wasn't the only one making big plays. The Orediggers racked up a total of 658 offensive yards and scored touchdowns on seven out of their first nine drives. Four different players found the endzone, including Aksel Richard who also made history with the program's first kick return touchdown in 14 years, sprinting 90 yards for the score.

Under center, Denver South alum Joseph Capra had a successful day in his first career start at quarterback. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 126 yards and added 80 rushing yards on seven carries. His favorite targets were Flynn Schiele and Max McLeod, who both caught touchdown passes from him.

Speaking of touchdowns, Richard's kick return answered a scoring drive from New Mexico Highlands, igniting a streak of seven straight scoring possessions for the Orediggers. The game was well in hand by the time Jake Sype added another touchdown with just over six minutes left in the game, bringing the score to 49-7.

The win kept the Orediggers' slim hopes of extending their conference title streak to six alive. However, in order to achieve this, they will need to defeat 10th-ranked CSU Pueblo next Saturday and hope for some favorable outcomes in the final two weeks of the season. CSU Pueblo, who also won their game against No. 8 Western Colorado on Saturday, can secure a share of the conference title with a win over Mines.

In other RMAC football action, South Dakota Mines defeated Chadron State 24-17, and Colorado Mesa beat Black Hills State 23-13. Unfortunately, the game between Fort Lewis and Adams State was postponed until later in the evening.
