City residents ask for regional IMD centre to help with weather information and forecasting.
In a recent event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department's service, Suresh Pujari, the State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, expressed the state government's concern about the frequent natural calamities that Odisha has been facing, such as cyclones and floods. He urged the IMD to upgrade its existing office in Bhubaneswar to a regional meteorological centre, in order to better monitor and predict these disasters. Currently, the IMD has six regional centres in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, but the minister emphasized the need for a centre in Odisha due to its history of being a frequent victim of natural disasters.

Mr. Pujari also highlighted the fact that Odisha has become a permanent address for various types of disasters, making it all the more crucial to have a regional office of the weather department in the state. He made this appeal to the director general of the IMD, hoping for a positive response.

Responding to the minister's plea, IMD DG Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra acknowledged the significance of Odisha's request and assured that the department has already set up weather monitoring stations in all 30 districts of the state. He also mentioned the presence of Doppler radars in Paradip and Gopalpur, with plans to install them in three more places – Balasore, Sambalpur, and Bhubaneswar – in the near future. This would greatly enhance the IMD's ability to monitor and forecast weather conditions in Odisha, a state that has been greatly affected by natural disasters.
