City on brink of breaking rain record; storms could continue for millions.
The city of Sydney has been facing a series of heavy rain and grey skies, with no signs of letting up over the weekend. This has put the city on track to break a record for consecutive damp days, much to the dismay of millions of people in the eastern part of Australia who were hoping for some sunny weather.

According to meteorologists, the rain and thunderstorms are expected to spread over the inland areas of New South Wales and southern Queensland in the coming days, before hitting the already saturated regions this weekend. This increases the risk of flooding in some parts of the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that Sydney is on the verge of breaking an all-time wet weather record. With nine days of rain already, and the wet conditions expected to continue until at least next Monday, the total number of consecutive rainy days could reach 13, coming close to the record of 16 days set in 1943 and 2022.

The persistent dampness is due to the high levels of moisture in the atmosphere above eastern Australia this week, caused by a stubborn high-pressure system in the south. Over the next few days, a pool of cold upper-level air will pass over the south-eastern parts of the country, converting some of this moisture into rain.

Meteorologists compare this process to a sponge full of water, where the cold air acts as someone squeezing out the water from the sponge. As a result, showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue developing over the eastern interior today, affecting areas of western NSW and Queensland, the north-east of South Australia, and the southern Northern Territory.

From tomorrow to Sunday, the rain and thunderstorms will spread even further east, covering parts of NSW, southern Queensland, and Victoria. Some areas in western NSW could receive 50mm to 80mm of rain, while northern Victoria and southern Queensland can expect 20mm to 40mm falls.

There is also a warning for potential heavy rain and flooding in eastern NSW over the weekend, as the already soaked coast braces for increased rainfall. The Illawarra and South Coast regions are at the highest risk, with potential two-day totals of 150mm to 250mm.
