Chicago's first Black-owned, independent cannabis dispensary has opened a second location.
Chicago has seen a new addition to the growing cannabis industry: the Brewer family's Grasshopper Club. The new dispensary is located at 58 E Roosevelt Road, making it one of the first Black-owned cannabis shops in the city. It was established by brothers Matthew and Chuck Brewer, along with their mother, Dianne Brewer.

At the grand opening, Ald. Lamont Robinson, an old schoolmate of Matthew's, was in attendance. The dispensary is looking to hire experienced employees in retail and hospitality, as well as those with knowledge of the cannabis industry. Chuck explained that this would create jobs for those who have been previously excluded from the cannabis industry due to discrimination or prior incarceration.

When the family first announced the opening of the dispensary, there were some concerns raised by the surrounding community. A public meeting was held to express these worries, and Matthew – a Harvard Business Graduate – was able to address them successfully. In the end, the majority of those who initially opposed the opening attended the grand opening to show their support.

In 2019, Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill legalizing cannabis in Illinois. However, the Brewer family was still faced with numerous obstacles when entering the industry. Matthew described the process as the "hardest thing" they had ever done, citing the complexity of cannabis operations.

The Brewer family has plans to expand their business, though these details remain confidential. The dispensary is open every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.
