Great news for all Witcher fans, as CD Projekt has officially confirmed that they are currently working on The Witcher 4! It has been over two years since the game was first announced, and while we have known about its existence for a while now, details about the game are still shrouded in mystery.
Interestingly, the game may not even be called "The Witcher 4", as CD Projekt is currently referring to it by the codename Polaris. However, we do know that it will be the first game in a new trilogy and will feature our beloved protagonist Geralt in some capacity, although not necessarily as the lead character.
The development of Polaris has been a long time coming, with CD Projekt previously announcing that full production would begin in the second half of 2024. But now, the studio has officially confirmed that the team has wrapped up preproduction and has moved on to the most intensive phase of development. CEO Michal Nowakowski expressed his pride and gratitude to the team for their dedication in a statement alongside the studio's Q3 2024 financial report.
In a separate video, the studio's chief financial officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, revealed that Polaris is currently the most advanced project at the studio, although there is still no official release date. This comes as a surprise, as many fans were expecting the remake of the original Witcher game to be the next release. However, that project is being developed by an external studio, Fool's Theory, so it seems that CD Projekt is not counting it as part of their internal projects.
Aside from Polaris, CD Projekt is also working on several other projects, including a new IP codenamed Project Hadar, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 codenamed Project Orion, and a new game set in the Witcher universe titled Project Sirius. The studio also announced that the highly successful Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold over 30 million copies worldwide, with its expansion, Phantom Liberty, selling over 8 million copies since its release in 2023.
But it's not just games that CD Projekt is working on. The studio also announced that they are collaborating with Netflix on another animation project set in the Cyberpunk universe, following the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. And for fans eagerly awaiting the live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk, CEO Michal Nowakowski revealed that the project is still in the conceptual stage, but they hope to start pitching it to potential streamers and studios soon.
In the midst of all these exciting updates, one thing is for sure: Geralt will be making a return in The Witcher 4, but perhaps not as the main character. We can't wait to see what CD Projekt has in store for us with these projects, and we'll be sure to keep you updated with any new developments. In other news, CD Projekt has congratulated Elden Ring on beating The Witcher 3's DLC record, and there are rumors that The Witcher series may make a big change based on the video game after replacing Henry Cavill. And for those still playing Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt has revealed that there may still be updates in the future to improve the game.
