A special team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday to investigate the heinous crime of rape and murder of a woman doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. The team, consisting of seven members and accompanied by a forensic expert, was sent from Delhi to assist in the investigation.
Their first stop was at the CBI's office in Nizam Palace, located in central Kolkata. From there, they proceeded to the CBI's other office at the central government office complex in Salt Lake, on the northern outskirts of the city. The team also took custody of the sole arrested suspect, Sanjay Ray, a civic volunteer, from the Kolkata Police.
According to the latest updates, a team of city police officers have already reached the S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital in south Kolkata to conduct a medical check-up of the accused. Once the check-up is completed, he will be handed over to the CBI officials. The CBI has registered a case under various sections of rape and murder and has taken over the case diary from the city police.
The CBI's involvement in the case came after a division bench of the Calcutta High Court, consisting of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, expressed disappointment over the progress of the city police's investigation and ordered for a court-monitored CBI probe.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police have issued a statement claiming to have transferred all the necessary case documents to the CBI, in compliance with the High Court's order. The statement also assured that the police will provide all the assistance needed by the agency to ensure that the victim's family receives justice. The police also stated that they have used their best resources and worked professionally on the investigation into this tragic incident.
The body of the junior doctor and postgraduate student was discovered on August 9th in the seminar room of the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. The suspect, Sanjay Ray, was later arrested by the Kolkata Police. The murder has sparked widespread outrage, with doctors and nurses leading protests not only in Kolkata but also in other parts of India.
