Canadian-born designer Evan Jerry has a mission to make Black art accessible to as many people as possible. To make this vision a reality, he has founded the Black in Design Collective, a new CB2 assortment featuring a global home decor collection from 11 Black artists and designers. According to Elle Decor, this partnership with CB2 is an effort to bring awareness to the stories of underrepresented groups and to create more diversity in the design industry.
The collection was designed to represent a range of cultures and backgrounds. Jerry expressed that he wanted the designers to express how they see Black futures in design. He was careful to not interfere with their creative processes.
One of the featured designers is Kenyan multidisciplinary designer Sandra Githinji. Her Dome coffee table is constructed from traditional Kikuyu stool silhouettes. Jerry was deliberate in including an international perspective to the collection, and he wanted to show how Black narratives can differ across the globe.
Dimitri Zephir’s Guadeloupe-inspired light fixtures, architect and furniture designer Jerome Byron’s side table and console, and Jerry’s own Arc bronze velvet bench are also featured pieces in the collection. Through this collection, Jerry is hoping to make the art accessible to as many people as possible.
Other designers featured in the Black in Design Collective include Nigerian and New York designer Lani Adeoye Lagos; Florida fiber artist and textile designer Élan Byrd; Garth Roberts of Garth in Germany; Forbes Masters founders Tavia Forbes and Monet Masters of Atlanta; French furniture designer Axel Mert; New York multidisciplinary designer Luam Melake; and Jean-Marc Bullet, founder of Atelier Bullet in Martinique. This collective provides an opportunity for these designers to reach a broader audience and share their unique stories.
