Cara Delevingne has responded to the backlash after her appearance at the Grand Prix this weekend. The model, 30, was one of the many stars that had attended the event, with celebrities such as Brad Pitt and Liam Payne also in attendance.
The incident started when Sky Sports reporter Martin Brundle approached Cara on the pre-race grid. Martin repeatedly told those on the grid that they now have to speak to the broadcaster, but the Paper Towns actress looked as though she was pretending not to have heard him. Martin couldn't resist a cheeky quip as he walked away, though, sarcastically telling the camera: ‘Ok, alright well…. I’m sure it would’ve been extremely interesting.’
Twitter was quick to pick up on the awkward interaction, accusing Cara of being 'rude', and asking why she was even at the event. Now, hours after catching heat, Cara has addressed the whole thing. Taking to Twitter, the film star responded to a tweet that analysed what went on:
“At this point, Martin Brundle is just doing it to manufacture the moment for the controversy of it all”, their tweet began. “You can clearly see the PR rep tell him ‘no’ and shake his head when he goes up towards Cara Delevingne. He had an out and he chose not to take it to make a statement.”
In reply, Cara wrote: “I was told to say no so I did. Thank you for seeing both sides xxx”. Later, a follower asked for clarification, to which Cara replied: “It wasn’t an agent, it was an F1 representative”.
In a later tweet, Cara assured everyone that she had a great time despite the backlash. “Anyway, I had so much fun today and was so happy to be there no matter what anyone else may think x”, she said.
This isn't the first time Cara has caught heat on social media. Earlier this year, the Victoria's Secret runway star was accused of having a ‘bad attitude’ after being seen rolling her eyes on the Oscars red carpet. While many branded her behaviour ‘awful’ and ‘rude’, others did jump to defend Cara, who has spoken openly about mental health in the past.
Most recently, she spoke about checking into rehab after a series of paparazzi photos emerged of her looking disheveled and appearing erratic on several occasions. Speaking to Vogue, she said of the pictures: ‘It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, okay, I don’t look well. You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way, those pictures were something to be grateful for.’
Cara is now on a sobriety journey away from substances, with the full support of her friends. “They ride for me and I love my friends so much, but it felt like a lot of the time, they were shallow relationships only because I wasn’t able to be honest about the things I was going through,” she added.
